The Commission
In the 1920s Mafia families across the US stockpiled new members so that their men could go unrecognized by their rivals, thus rendering assassinations easier to execute than lasagna. The rosters soon grew to absurd proportions. In 1931, seven family bosses formed the Commission (depicted above, in The Godfather) to govern all American mafia families, circulating a list of members so that the rampant assassinations would end. The Commission, in a somewhat reduced form, still exists today
